Collection: Filey Art Society
As part of our ongoing support for Filey Art Society, we exhibit the work of one of their members each month.
For May they have chosen the work of Barrie Petterson.
Barrie attended Burnley Art College 1956-1960 as part of his apprenticeship, as a sign writer and coach painter. He did not carry forward in this career, yet filled leisure time painting pictures.
He carried off many apprenticeship national awards for his art work, some of which local constabularies allowed him to keep! Barrie considers himself a narrative artist: lots of humans appear in his paintings. He likes his picture to tell a story much the same as artists far back in time. It is up to the viewer to take pleasure working out what is happening! People populating his pictures tend to turn up at the last minute and Barrie is often bewildered where some of them come from – and why.
Barrie has acted as Chairman in the former Cayton Art Club and held office in Scarborough Art Society. Both organisations did not survive the Covid 2019 lockdown.
All his works are in acrylic paint and are original one-offs. Prints are not available.
Barrie has lived in Scarborough since 1984. He is now a widower and has, as his only companion, Penny the Ragdoll cat. The latter shows no interest in her master’s many accomplishments as painter, cartoonist, writer, professional pianist and general know-all. So far, fame has escaped him.
You can contact him if you want him to paint something special for you.
